Open models gain market share as frontier model dominance fades

Chinese open-weight models now account for 41% of Hugging Face downloads, and the top six models on OpenRouter are all open. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue predicts frontier models will be reserved for specialized tasks while most production workloads shift to open alternatives.
