AI designs 16 functional viral genomes from scratch in Stanford study

Stanford and Arc Institute researchers used genome language models Evo 1 and Evo 2 to design bacteriophages from scratch; 16 of the viruses, reported in Science on 6 August, infected E. coli strains resistant to the natural phages they were modeled on. Lead researcher Brian Hie says collaborators have asked to use the model against disease-causing bacteria.
