NBER paper: Automation can harm workers without replacing them

A new NBER working paper (w35559) models how a credible machine alternative can weaken the meaning workers derive from their jobs, even when they remain employed. It shows this loss can raise compensation when wages adjust fully, but workers bear some loss when they adjust only partly.
