AI coding is addictive. Engineers are paying the price

LeadDev's Engineering Leadership Report 2026 finds 45% of engineers work more hours than last year, up from 38% in 2025. Advanced engineers saw the biggest jump, from 28% to 53%. Blogger Steve Yegge describes an "AI vampire" effect that makes coding "genuinely addictive."
