Open weights LLMs could catch closed source by Dec 2026, analysis shows

The performance gap between open weights and closed source LLMs has been shrinking since summer 2024 and may reach zero by December 3, 2026, based on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. The analysis uses 18 different benchmarks and finds a consistent narrowing trend.
