AI professors are negotiating the new realities of academic research
At a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 convening in Mountain View, academics said universities can't afford the GPUs needed to train frontier models and can't study the inner details of Claude or ChatGPT. UC Berkeley's Nika Haghtalab likened the situation to being a biologist in a world where private companies exclusively controlled CRISPR.
